This weekend was definitely a packed and memorable one for me.
( LAN weekend updates ) Sunday..
warskunk,
yarrick and I went to the Science Museum (My first visit since it moved from it's old location) in St. Paul to take in the
Pompeii exhibit as well as the "Secrets of Greece" movie at the Omni Theater.
A truly remarkable experience to say the least.
I knew the story of Pompeii going in. But I wasn't prepared for the impact I would be left with or the thoughts that would remain thereafter. To see casts preserved for over two millennium of people at their moment of death when Vesuvius erupted is something you can't really easily find words for. You wonder how they lived and what they did or even..what might they have been thinking in their final moments?
The rise and fall of ancient Greece was interesting as well. I went to that to get a little more depth in research for a character I have from that era as well as general interest. Although the two events are separate in time and nature, it's observed that Greek influence (particularly in the arts) found it's way to Pompeii and greater Italy of the day.
And as we left the Museum something occurred to me...
Although our society may never meet a fate similar to that of Pompeii, one thing I believe is certain... There will come a day where our cars, computers, art, literature, etc etc will be on display for someone else to wonder what life was like for us.
